Apparently she is to be cut into 3 pieces and have perspex stuck over the holes so we can all peek inside.

Naaa, better to leave her in one piece I say! Probably all ready happened now.

I can accept a write-off being carved up but not a whole u-boat.

pure historic vandalism or educational material.... left to ones opinion I suppose?

At the Whitby 'Spirit of the 40s' weekend(last weekend- 18-20 April), I was talking to another reenactor whose 21stC impression is as a Arts Coordinator in Liverpool.
He said the story of the U-boat was, the trust that owned went bankrupt, it was cut up because they(?), couldn't find a transporter big enough to move it in one piece.
The cuts have been made along the original welds so in future it could be welded back together.
He said that everyone involved in the Arts and Museum world in Liverpool begged the authorities not to destroy the integrity of the U-Boat up but they were dealing with people who have no sense of history. :(
After all 'its not like it is RN is it?', seemed to be the attitude. At least it didn't go for razor blades.

I agree with you all about the butchering of one of the few remaining U-Boats left in exsistance today...
But I have just recently visited U-534 (the U-Boat story) and its been done very well..(not quite sure how it cost £5 million though?)..
But if you happen to find yourself in Birkenhead.. its well worth the £5.00..
Though I think it would be a much better visitor experience if they had some guys in KM uniform interacting with the public every now and then, prehaps on special anniversary occasions, for instance the Atlantic war commemerations, D-Day events and the such ...( maybe Kevin and the guys from the U-Boat society could offer thier services?..) I think that it would go down a treat with the public...

All very interesting - I had heard that the reason for cutting her up was the DDA, if you've got an exhibit you have to be able to get the "raspberry ripples" round it!!
