Reading a book titled Heaven and Hell - the War Diary of a German Paratrooper. Lt. Poppel was with 1 Parachute Regiment and served in almost every theatre. He often talks about coming off the front line and shaving off his beard. Water is the key - too cold on the Russian Front to waste fuel melting frozen water to shave (he said his canteen was a waste of time because the water just froze in it), too hot in tropical climes to waste water shaving, often too dangerous to go in search of extra water to shave with when on the front line.

He always shaved when pulled off the front line though because they were fiercely proud of their appearance and presentation was key.

But that was the exception rather than the norm?
Pretty much every other pic of German at Cassino shows him clean shaven

Clean shaven with concessions to combat stubble is utterly uncontroversial. I suspect the subtext here is can I keep my goatee?

My answer would be, not really...until you have a unit f over a hundred active attendees then one or two might get away with it.
