The Weser was crossed in April 1945 with only light casualties. 3rd Armoured had driven their way to the river, with 1st Division drawing the task of finding a crossing point through extensive reconnaissance. Most of the outfit was set to cross via tread-way bridges but many were swept away by the current, the resulting lack of bridges meant a return to the boats. The bank was only lightly defended by young SS troops who were easily neutralised. The easy crossing was the calm before the storm of the Harz Mountains campaign.

The only “special” equipment issued for the crossing was the USN lifebelt. Many men were lucky enough to have the combat jacket and combat boots however the rough-out service shoes and leggings were still seen in the regiment. The folding shovel was most common, but again, earlier types were seen.

Here is the first photo from the weekend.
I will post some more later in the day

Wayne...the snow pjoties are fkn excellent, except maybe the pointing guns...I don't like them, even ours...

The boat ones, I just have to say...Wouldn't you guys get over that river quicker and with less risk of getting hurt if ye had a modern outboard, I mean, FFS, ye can get them in exchange and mart...

I'll get me'coat...
