Hey most PPSH-41s wood work is a dark brown, but I've seen the odd one or two that's a lighter colour. Is that a difference in country of production and/or year? Want to make sure I get one I can use for reenactment!

If it's got lacquer or any kind of varnish on it clean it all off - I used Nitromors and fine grade wire wool on mine - then brush on loads of linseed oil.

And oil the woodwork about once a year after that.

It's on Chelmsford militaria and wasn't going out specifically to get a lighter wood worked one, just the best I can find.

doesn't seem to have varnish on it, so the lighter ones just a different wood or finish from the factory?

Well, it's a while since I've been to the fair at Marconi (I should go more often, it's only 20 minutes away from me) but they do exist.

I've never used their mail order thing though I'm an old fashioned type who likes to handle things before I part with my hard earned cash. :D

Regarding finishes on Russian stocks, there is a lot of conjecture over what the original finish was.
