Had a quick look through the forum itself but not seen anything relevant so here goes ..

A friend of mine wants a .30 cal for his jeep ... but wants to know if there is a serial number reference guide so he can be sure he buys a WWII (or earlier) dated one .. are there any lists anywhere please .. ??

As far as I'm aware the 1919A4 production ended in 1945 and post 1945 the A4s were Arsenal Rebuilt or new 1919A6s were made. If I remember correctly the last 1919A4s by Saginaw were in the late 700,000 range and the A6s started in the late 700,000 early 800,000 range.

I have put a couple of WW2 1919's up on Milweb yesterday, useful if he can't get a cheap one at the show.

The Israeli guns were 7.62 NATO rather than 7.92mm. To be honest, the booster is an American .30 GI booster modified by bushing the centre to reduce the diameter and increase the back pressure. There were 2 boosters, the one piece and 2 piece, also 2 different diameter holes for M1 and M2 ammo.

The only real differences between a GI .30 and a Izzy gun is the rear sight bracket has a tab guard welded on, a 7.62mm marked bolt, modified booster, modified top cover, markings, wider belt pawl and the trunion was bored out and relined for the pintle. All these mods are either hidden or can be removed except for markings and the wider belt pawl which not many people would notice.

There were small numbers of A6 guns built for Korea by RIA (Rock Island Arsenal)and Saco Lowell (SAK) most guns will be WW2 or possibly pre war conversions. WW2 Would be Saginaw, Buffalo Arms, Border City Industries (Saginaw gear plant in Canada) Rock Island Arsenal. WW1 1917s converted using RIA produced parts will be New England Westinghouse, Remington, and a very few Colt guns. If anyone comes across a Colt 1917, 17a1, or 1919a4 or A6 Please contact me. Would love to document it for the 1919tech sight. They produced very few 1917s because the US govt did not want them to stop production of the Vickers to tool up for the 1917 Brownings

Have found a Colt gun, hope to examine it in near future. One of about 2,700 built. Never know what will show up. It a deactivated through excessive welding. Welded things really didnt need to.
