Just wondering if the assistant carried the 30 or tripod? I have heard that the assistant carried the 30 so the gunner could chose where the gun went. he would put the tripod down where he wanted, the assistant would then hand him the 30 and he would already be in the firing position. Is this correct or should the assistant place the tripod? It could just be my group giving the FNG the hardest job posible!

Thanks

Fingers

That sounds quite feasible. Any experts able to shed light on it?

well i did read in a book today, yes, you do read things in books! That it was usually the gunner that carried the gun. Of course when the A6 came along then it would be the gunner who carried the gun so he could put it down straight away, where he wanted.

I take it the A6 had the tripod (or some sort of base) permanently attached?

The 30. cal A6 has a bipod like the BAR at the front of the barrel. It also has a pistol grip and shoulder stock, and carrying handle ala the BAR. The A6 was changed from a 3 man crew to a 2 man crew as one man now carried the gun and the other man the ammuniton. Main reason for introduction was to give more automatic firepower to US platoons as German units had more MGs than US units.

Regards
Matt

Tom, I didnt want the carbine because you said it wasnt that good and you prefered the Garand. Im borrowing Chris's M2 ammo bag so i can carry 2 tins on my chest and have a chain around my neck and a tin in the other hand, sort of rambo style. :D :D :D

i actuly wouldnt recommend that, u carry the extra tin in your hand and u wont be able to fire your garand, and u wont be able to go prone with the ammo vest with the tins digging in and your carrying the extra weight of the tins,, im getting 2 gp bags so u can put the belts in there. as im gonna be carrying 500 rounds aswell, but if u wanna be rambo im not stopping ya :P

Tom
