If you're on about the 4th Inf picture Tim, you're kidding right?

If it was a cloth belt, it would never be that neat - there'd be rounds all over the place and missing from having been lugged about in that manner!

Plus, if you look closely at the two ends on the left, you can see a round in one end with only a single link holding it (to the left) and one with two links (and hence a spare "middle" of a link hanging extra) (to the right).

No Glen, I was commenting on what Karoshi and Reddevil had said earlier in reference to the 3 links( to pictures not metal!) (should have included a quote).

There seemed to be confusion as to what Karoshi had said so I thought I would have my ten peneth and really confuse everyone, seemed to have worked!!. :)
The gunner in the Dauntless pictured was , according to the flight log,a Mr Lewis.

The 4th Div picture is without a shadow of a doubt "linked", I agree with you 100%.
I've carried 1000s of linked , albeit 7.62 ,for countless miles , there is no way I could mistake it!! :D
